Dell Huckins is Picked up Dead in the Highway.
Earley{sic} Tuesday morning, Sheriff Culver received the information that James Kastohryz had found the lifeless body of an unknown man near his place, and the sheriff started at once for the place accompanied by Coroner Plummer and County Attorney Grannis.
The body was identified by a letter found on it written for Joe Block recommending him as his agent for the purchase of old junk. Huckins has at work for some time and the morning of his death was sent to Spillville for a load of old iron and given $7.00 with which to buy it, and this note introduction. He got his load of iron at Spillville and came home by way of Protivin through which he passed about 8 o’clock in a state of intoxication, which was the last time he was seen alive. About two miles north of Protivin he turned east for some unknown reason, and it is supposed that he was toppled from his seat by a sudden lurch of his wagon, a rut being found in the road near where the body lay, and his neck broken by the fall. The team proceeded about a half mile further where it was found.
After viewing the remains and inquiring into the circumstances, the Coroner decided that an inquest was unnecessary and the body was brought to Cresco.
The deceased was unmarried, having been divorced by his wife about two years ago.
