Maurice Whalen, an old resident of Winneshiek County, near Plymouth Rock, died suddenly, last Wednesday, while setting in his chair. Death was the result of heart failure and dropsy from which he had been suffering for some time. The deceased was about 56 years of age and leaves a family of thirteen children. The funeral was held on Saturday morning and was largely attended.
Transcriber’s Note: There is a Morris Whalen buried in St. Agnes Cemetery who died in 1906 and was born in 1852. This is probably the same person.

Death was busy in Burr Oak last week, three of our citizens lying dead at the same time: Maurice Whalen, Mrs. James Sharp and Mrs. Stewart Wade. Mr. Whalan{sp} was buried from St. Bridget’s {sic} church in the west part of the township. Mrs. Sharp from the M. E. church in this village on Thursday and Mrs. Wade from the same on Friday both of which were largely attended. Rev. Hallett preached two splendid sermons which were closely listened to by appreciative audiences. Rachel Moore was born in Pocahontas county, W. Va., March 18, 1824; married there to James Sharp Feb. 24, 1842. They moved to Iowa in 1853 and settled just across the Burr Oak line in Hesper township, where they lived until 1861 when they made a home four miles northwest of Burr Oak village. Mrs. Sharp died Sept. 11, 1906, aged {8}2½ years. Seven of their ten children still survive, Geo. At Mitchell S. D.; Robert at Driscoll, N. D.; Mrs. James Masters at Walnut Grove, Minn.; Mrs. Lovina Pierce at Garretstown, Minn.; Mrs. Martha Knox, Mrs. Prudence Masters and Edwin of Burr Oak.
Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows Mr. Whalen’s first name is spelled Morris. It also shows he is buried in St. Agnes Cemetery. The year of birth could be either 1852 or 1862.
