A Pioneer Mother Gone
One of the pioneer mothers of Winneshiek county, Mrs Signe Christen, passed away on Friday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nelson, in Bluffton township.
Signe Berguffson was born in Teemarken, Norway, June 10, 1823 and came to America in 1843, settling near Madison, Wis., coming to Winneshiek county in 1854, where she has since lived. She was married in Wisconsin it{sic} 1848 to Sven Christen, to whom six children were born, all of whom survive her. Her husband died Feb. 21, 1868. The children are Clarence, Samuel, Albert and Bertha (Mrs. Bertha Mott) of this city, Walter of Aneta, N. D., and Caroline (Mrs T. Nelson) of Bluffton.
The funeral services were held on Monday, at the home of her daughter in Bluffton township, Rev. Ottersen officiating, with interment in Phelps cemetery in this city. The females were followed to their last resting place by a large number of those who had through her long residence in this county learned to esteem her highly for her many admirable qualities —Decorah Public OpinionTranscriber’s Note: Her gravestone shows her first name as Singne.
