Louise Zahasky, age 89, of Decorah, IA, died Saturday, January 12, 2019 at her home in Decorah.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 18, 2019 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah with Pastor Ed Krawczyk officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Benedict Cemetery in Decorah.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday, one and one half hours before the service, at Fjelstul Funeral Home.

Helen Louise (Quinn) Zahasky was born on February 15, 1929 in Riceville, Iowa, the daughter of John and Bernice (Kinner) Quinn. She grew up in Cresco, Iowa along with her five sisters and one brother, where she attended Catholic grade school, and graduated from Assumption High School with the class of 1946.

She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart Donald E. Zahasky on November 16, 1946. The couple moved to Decorah in 1951 where they raised their five children; Rick, Tom, Kathy, John and Paul.

In 1969 Louise received her licensed practical nursing degree from Area One Technical College in Calmar, Iowa (now Northeast Iowa Community College). She worked at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital until her retirement. She is remembered for her compassion with patients and her great love for the moms and babies she cared for in the OB department.

In addition to having a passion for gardening, Louise loved to paint and filled the house with her original artwork. Her first and foremost love was for her family. The door was always open, and Louise and Don’s home was often filled with kids and grandkids. She had a gift for making every person feel loved and cherished. Her kitchen was everyone’s favorite place to gather as she cooked her world-famous pancakes.

Louise passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, January 12, 2019. She was preceded in death by both parents; sisters Marion Pilbeam, Isabelle Kratz, Doris Osterhoudt, Bernice (Sis) O’Connell; and one brother, Donnie Quinn.

Louise is survived by Donald, her husband of 72 years; one sister, Marge Halverson of West Union, Iowa; five children: Rick (Roseann) Zahasky of Decorah, Iowa, Tom (Marsha) Zahasky of Madison, Wisconsin, Kathy (Neal) Kephart of Hayward, Wisconsin, John (Melanie) Zahasky of Juneau, Alaska and Paul (Melissa) Zahasky of Juneau, Alaska; 16 grandchildren: Amy (Eric) Hudson, Andy (Andrea) Zahasky, Nic (Kara) Zahasky, Sara (Hans Kabat) Zahasky, Ben (Kimberly) Zahasky, Brianna (Matt) Kauer, Dan (Michelle) Kephart, Tim (Susan) Kephart, Molly (Tim) Noake, Katie (Zach) Kerns, Stephanie (Chris) Aguayo, David (Kaylene) Zahasky, Melissa (Tim) Holcomb, Laura Zahasky, Quinn (Emily) Zahasky, Abigail Zahasky; 36 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
