Thomas (Tom) William Welch, age 70, passed away Saturday, November 3, 2018 after a short cancer-related illness at Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa, where he had lived since mid-September, 2018. No church or memorial services are planned.
Tom Welch was born January 20, 1948 in Clinton, Iowa, and was the youngest child of Oswald and Madeline (Cox) Welch. He grew up on the family farm near DeWitt, Iowa, and attended one-room, country school there. In 1962, he moved to Clinton, Iowa with his parents and graduated from Clinton High School in 1966. After high school, he graduated from Loras College in Dubuque in 1970. Tom's first job after college was doing the news on KDUB-TV in Dubuque, where he, among other things, interviewed Svetlana Stalin, covered Kennedy Mall's opening day and the Wadena Rock Festival. His other jobs after college included: Babka Publishing, Lederle Pharmaceuticals, and stockbroker for Dain Bosworth and A. G. Edwards, all while living in Dubuque. He also co-owned and operated Whistlestop Antiques in Calmar, Iowa in later years.
In April of 1972, Tom married Ann (Williams) Welch at St. Joseph's Church in Dubuque, Iowa. They had two children: Carey Ann Welch and Matthew Grant Welch. Ann passed away on August 31, 1987. Tom married Mary (Rolfes) Welch in May of 1989 at St. Anthony's Church in Dubuque.
Tom loved antiques, watching football, playing golf, and enjoyed a glass of red wine daily. He had served on the Board of South Winn Golf & Country Club and Calmar Senior Citizens.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Oswald and Madeline Welch, in-laws , Ken and Rozella Williams, Arthur and Lillian Rolfes, his first wife: Ann Welch, a brother: James Welch, and a sister-in-law, Lois Welch (wife of Patrick Welch). He is survived by his wife, Mary Welch, children, Carey Welch (Tom Phillips) and Matthew Welch, one grandchild, Simone Phillips, sister and brother-in-law, Annette and Scott Evenson, Brother-in-law, David Rolfes, siblings, John (Jack) and his wife, Mary, Jerome (Jerry) and his wife Nan, Marcia Welch (widow of James Welch), Patrick Welch, and Maureen (Welch) Wagner and her husband, Gene, and many nieces and nephews.
