Joseph Vondersitt died Sunday, February 16, 1997, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, after fighting a long battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Calmar with the Rev. Richard Kuhn officiating and Rev. Vincent Simon assisting. Al Sensor was organist accompanying the adult choir and Clark Goltz, soloist.
The Calmar Fire Dept. served as honorary pallbearers.
Casket bearers were nephews: Gerry Rothmeyer, Duane Rothmeyer, Lyle Rothmeyer, Randy Rothmeyer, John Cremer, and Don Cremer. Burial was in the St. Aloysius Cemetery with the French Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Joseph James Vondersitt was born November 17, 1925 in Calmar to Anton and Emma (Yirkovsky) Vondersitt. He was baptized in his faith, confirmed, and received his education at St. Aloysius Catholic Church and School.
On June 9, 1948, he was married to Nora Cremer by the Rev. Robert Hirsch at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. They became the parents of three children.
He has been a life-long resident of Calmar except for one year when he worked in the iron ore ranged of northern Minnesota. He began working for Calmar Manufacturing Company in 1952 and was employed there until his retirement some 37 years later. He prided himself in his safety records as a truck driver for the company.
He was a member of St. Aloysius Church and served as an usher and was a member of the Rosary Society. He was a dedicated and committed member of the Calmar Volunteer Fire Department most of his life. Joe enjoyed being with his family, fishing, boating, and just going to the river.
Survivors include two daughters, Maejean Becker and husband Ron of Ossian; Ruby Helgerson of Decorah and a son Tim and wife Deb of Calmar. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Ryan and Regan Becker of Ossian; Michael Vondersitt of Calmar; and Tony and Allison Vondersitt of Calmar; and two sisters, Marie Vondersitt of Calmar and Ruth Huinker and husband Felix of Lancaster, CA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora, in 1990, by his parents, and by his brother Donald.
