Carlton A. Ruen, age 87, of Maquoketa, Iowa and formerly of Decorah, Iowa, died Sunday morning, June 24, 2018 at Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2018 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah. Private Family Burial will be in Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery in rural Decorah at a later date.
Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. Monday, one hour before the service, at Fjelstul Funeral Home.
Carlton Alden Ruen was born on April 10, 1931 to Arthur (Art) and Florence (Pilgrim) Ruen of rural Frankville, Iowa. He grew up on a dairy farm with his two sisters, Elaine and Kathryn, and later moved to Decorah where he was a charter bus tour operator for many years. Carlton loved his travels throughout the United States. Playing cards and golf as well as fishing and deer hunting were interests he greatly enjoyed. Carlton married Beverly Lee Bruening on June 9, 1951. They had five children - Duanne, David, Karla, Kevin and Lea - all born between 1951-1961.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Florence Ruen, his former wife, Beverly Lee Ruen White, his daughter, Duanne Ott Thiel, his sons-in-law, Leroy Ott and Kelly Koenig, and his brother-in-law, William Roach.
Carlton is survived by sisters, Elaine (Donald) Johnson of Akron, OH, Kathryn Roach of St. Paul, MN, sons Dr. David (Susan) Ruen of Mason City, IA, Kevin Ruen of Brainerd, MN, daughters Karla Koenig of Waunakee, WI and Lea (Douglas) Daniels of Virginia Beach, VA. Carlton is also survived by fourteen grandchildren: Michael (Anne) Ott of Iowa City, IA, Amanda (Jared) Pins of Hiawatha, IA, Jessica (Dan) Novotny of Cedar Rapids, IA, Cameron Ruen of Portland, OR, Brandon Ruen of Mason City, IA, Aaron Ruen of Charlotte, NC, Devon (Matt) Ksiazk of Hillard, OH, Ellison Ruen of Iowa City, IA, Kelly (Abbey) Koenig of Waunakee, WI, Karin Koenig of Waunakee, WI, Rick Ruen of Houston, TX, Erica (Joe) Webster of Brainerd, MN, Michael Ruen of Cedar Rapids, IA, Marshall Daniels of Virginia Beach, VA. He is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial gifts may be given to the Decorah High School Baseball Team, c/o Decorah Viking Athletic Booster Club, P.O. Box 293, Decorah, IA 52101.
