Funeral services were held on Monday, July 2, 2012 at the Ossian Lutheran Church in Ossian, Iowa for Irene Pauline Rogness, age 94, of Ossian who passed away at the Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian. Officiating at the services were Lay Pastor Roy Christopherson and Rev. Wayne Ellingson. Interment was at the Hillside Cemetery in Ossian, Iowa.

Irene was born May 29, 1918 four miles south of Ossian to Carl and Gurina (Lervold) Johnson. Her father died in 1919 and in 1923 her mother married Christian Hansen who adopted Irene. She was baptized June 16, 1918 and confirmed in her faith August 27, 1933 at the Ossian Lutheran Church. Irene obtained an education in the Ossian Public School and graduated May 29, 1935. Following her graduation she was employed at Monte's Jewelry and Sampson Cleaners.

On November 10, 1942 Irene married Gustav "Gus" Rogness in Enid, Oklahoma. They made their home in Ossian after Gus was discharged from the Air Corps. They became the parents to three children. Gus passed away in October of 1966 at the age of fifty. Gus and Irene operated the Nicandy Cafe for three and a half years. They then did custodial work at South Winneshiek Elementary School for six years. After her husband's death, Irene worked for the Winneshiek County Nurse and then went on to work in the Dietary Department at the County Care in Freeport for twelve and a half more years, retiring in 1983. After her retirement, she sold her home and moved into the Ossian Senior Apartments and in 2006, moved to the Ossian Senior Hospice.

Irene has been a member of the Ossian Lutheran Church and the Ruth Circle. She also has been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over seventy-two consecutive years and was a former member of the Senior Citizen's Club. Irene loved music, was an Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan and loved to watch the Chicago Bulls play. Her hobby for many years was embroidering dish towels.

Irene is survived by her children: Gary (Ginger) Rogness of Rochester, Minnesota, Marilyn (Harold) Heth of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Elaine (Ron) Ishman of Marion, Iowa; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter; sister-in-law Sylvia Peterson of West Union, Iowa and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her grandson, Ryan Rogness, her parents, her sister Gladys (Don) Pike; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law; a niece and several nephews.
