Germaine Johanna Schneberger, 93, daughter of Hubert and Albina (Huinker) Schneberger, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society Home in West Union, Iowa. Germaine was born on Wednesday, February 4, 1925 on the family farm, south of Festina, the first of thirteen children. She attended grade school at St. Mary’s in Festina.

Germaine pursued employment beyond the family farm, working for quite a few years for families with newborns, assisting new mothers and caring for the babies. In the 1950s she went to work housekeeping and being a nanny for the Fritz Carlson family, Garth, Lara and Brad, fondly caring for and enjoying their life adventures and times together. Germaine spent her weekdays in Decorah with the Carlson family and returning home on weekends. After retirement in 1992, Germaine took a job cleaning the City of Calmar Library, giving her the opportunity of getting a good supply of new books, as reading was one of her passions. Germaine hosted many family gatherings at her home in Calmar. Her great cooking, baking and canning were prized by all of her family and friends. The many activities that Germaine enjoyed were quilting, playing cards, gardening, working on puzzles, reading her Harlequins and watching baseball games, especially the Chicago Cubs. A CUB highlight for her was a limousine ride to Wrigley Field, sitting three rows behind the batter’s box and home plate. She watched Sammy Sosa hit three home runs, just for her. Germaine's handcrafted quilts, which she made for every family member that got married or had a baby, are part of her special legacy. Germaine was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church and Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Halvorsen-Giesen Unit 266 of the American Legion Auxiliary, Calmar, Iowa from 1982 to the present.

Germaine is survived by her brothers and sisters: Robert (Anna May) of West Union, Kenneth (Ethel Mae) of New Hampton, Marie (Vern, deceased) of Fremont, NE, James (Alma, deceased) of Calmar, Gerald (Audrey, deceased) of Venice FL., Margaret (Milo, deceased) of LaCrosse, WI, Paul (Lori) of Mansfield, TX, Lois of Scottsdale, AZ, Duane of Twin Falls, ID and Sister In Law, Marcie (LeRoy, deceased) of Ft.
