Verna Maxine Wangsness, 91, of Ossian, Iowa died Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa. Verna Maxine was born to Lester and Edna (Mork) Torkelson in Forest City, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church. Verna graduated from Ossian High School in 1944 and Hamilton Business College, Mason City, Iowa in 1946.

Verna was united in marriage with Howard Ove Wangsness on September 15, 1950 at First Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, Iowa. She worked as a farmwife and Accountant-Bookkeeper for Schmitz-Furniture and Funeral Home in Ossian, Ossian Sales Barn and the Union Produce Co-Op until retiring in 1990. Verna was a sweet and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Verna was active in many community organizations, including Farm Bureau, 4-H, Aid Association for Lutherans, Trinity Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid and a Sunday School Teacher. Verna loved to travel all over the United States and beyond to Norway and Canada. She enjoyed square dancing, card club. She mostly enjoyed gathering with her friends and family.

Verna is survived by her two children, Robert (Mary) Wangsness of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Julie (Ted) Schneider of Hudson, Wisconsin; one granddaughter, Danielle (Ryan Beck) Wangsness of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Nolan Wangsness, Cade Beck and Harper Beck; brother-in-law, Kenneth (Ila) Wangsness of Allison, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Joanne Egge of Decorah, Iowa, Norma Wangsness of Decorah, Iowa, Georgia Snyder of Decorah, Iowa, Sharon Wangsness of Allison, Iowa and Daune (Dave) McCulloch of Quincy, Illinois; ten nephews; nine nieces and several cousins.

Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Howard on March 17, 2015; grandson, Thomas Wangsness; parents, Lester and Edna Torkelson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Johanna Wangsness; brother, Leslie Torkelson; five brothers-in-law, Willis Wangsness, John Wangsness, Roy Snyder, Gil Egge and Loren “Butch” Weselmann; and two sisters-in-law, Virgina Snyder and Dorothy Torkelson.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Ossian, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before services at the church on Monday.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am on Monday, February 26, 2018 at Calmar Lutheran Church, Calmar, Iowa with Rev. Ron Pederson as the Officiant.

Burial will follow at Calmar City Cemetery, Calmar, Iowa.

Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Ossian, Iowa is helping the family with arrangements.
