Services held for Ruth Burri, 83
Funeral services for Ruth Burri of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 13 at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen officiating. Interment was in First Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Allan Boice, David Burri, David Hamilton, Ron Peterson, Lester K. Sorenson, and Roger Timp. Honorary pallbearers were: Matthew Burri, Arnold R. Duneman, and Bernard C. Livin- good. Fjelstul Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Ruth, 83, died Monday, April 8, 2002 at Green Lea Manor, in Mabel, MN of a long illness.
Ruth Alberta Burri was born October 13, 1918 in Winneshiek County, the daughter of Julian Sandvik and Gertrude (Hammervold) Sandvik. She was baptized at Fremont Lutheran Church. Ruth’s mother died accidentally when she was two years old and she was adopted by her aunt, Lena Pederson Sandvik and Albert Sandvik. She was confirmed at Fremont Lutheran Church. Ruth attended public schools in Winneshiek County and graduated from eighth grade on June 2, 1933. For several years after her graduation Ruth worked as a hired girl.
On October 13, 1937 she married Adolph Frederick Burri at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. They farmed in Winneshiek County, near Kendallville until 1961. During that time they were active members of the Fremont Lutheran church. When they retired from the farm they moved to Decorah and Ruth was employed as a chef at Luther College for a number of years.
After retiring, Ruth enjoyed camping, reading murder mysteries, doing crocheting, embroidery, and cooking.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church at Decorah and was active in the Altar Guild.
She is survived by two daughters: Phyllis Burri of Decorah and Constance Boice of St. Charles, MN; two sons: Eugene Burri of Rochester, MN and James of Onalaska, WI; five grandchildren; ten great- grandcliildren; one great-great- granddaughter; and two half-sisters: Gerd Holden of Trondheim, Norway and Margot of Leksvik, Norway.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Adolph; one grandson; her parents; her adoptive parents; two sisters: Gladys Teetshorn and Inga Teetshorn; and four brothers: Gerhard, Engvald, Leon, and Elmer.
