Henry James Monroe

Henry James Monroe, son of Frank S. and Mathilda (Dowd) Monroe, was born on March 20, 1904 near Castalia, Iowa. He died on Thursday, March 11, 1993 in the Good Samaritan Center in West Union. He was 88.

He attended the Blumhagen school near his home. On Feb. 25, 1924 he married Nettie A. Peschel in the United Brethren Parsonage in Castalia. To this union three sons were born.

Henry lived his entire life on the family farm north of Castalia. In 1967 they retired and moved to their home in Castalia. During this time, Henry worked as a carpenter.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Edwin, and a daughter-in-law, Virginia. Also preceding him in death are six grandchildren, Larry, Bobby, Patty, Wayne, Jean and Janice; and two brothers, Thomas and Clark Monroe.

Surviving are his wife, Nettie; two sons, James Monroe and his wife Marjorie of West Union and Henry Monroe, Jr., his wife Lorraine of Castalia; five grandchildren, Roberta Monroe, Connie Rothmeyer, Barb Schuchman, Becky Hanson and Cindy Grimes; 12 great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 15, at 11 a.m. at the Castalia United Methodist Church, the Rev. Ken Seney officiating. The soloist was Larry Johansen and the pianist was Florence Albright. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery. Casket bearers were Merle Monroe, Vernon Kamp, Leon Everman, Bill Buddenberg, Davis Buddenberg and Curtis Monroe.
