Lenora D. Leistikow, age 104, of Decorah, Iowa, died Sunday evening, January 14, 2018 at Wellington Place in Decorah.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, with the Rev. Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in Burr Oak Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Friday, January 19 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, and on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m., one hour before the service, at Burr Oak Lutheran Church.
Lenora Doretta Hoines was born March 10, 1913 at home in Kendallville, Iowa to Rachel and Elias Hoines. She was baptized April 6, 1913 at Fremont Lutheran Church and confirmed June 24, 1928 at First Lutheran Church, Cresco, Iowa. Lenora had 2 brothers and 3 sisters. She attended Fremont rural school and graduated from Cresco High School. Lenora took a Normal Training course in high school to become a teacher. She worked a year at Aase Haugen Home southwest of Decorah, and taught four years at Fremont #2, her home school. In September, 1936 Lenora enrolled at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, known as University of Northern Iowa. She attended one year. She taught again at Madison #2 September, 1937 through May, 1938. She was not able to continue teaching as she was to be married.
On June 1st, 1938 Lenora was united in marriage to Carl Albert Leistikow at Fremont Lutheran Church. To this union five children were born: Harlan Ellsworth, James Carlton, Linda Kay, Loren Earl, and Rachel Ida. Carl and Lenora farmed in the Burr Oak area for 24 years. For 5 years they owned and operated the Hamre Shoe Store in Decorah. Lenora worked at the Aase Haugen Home as a nurses’ aide during these years. They continued to attend Burr Oak Lutheran Church where Carl was a charter member. In 1967 Lenora and Carl moved back to the Burr Oak area and purchased a farm where they lived until they retired in 1975 and purchased a home again in Decorah. Later they moved to an apartment near the Senior Center where they enjoyed all the activities.
During their retirement they took many bus trips and traveled the United States, parts of Canada and the Caribbean. Lenora also traveled in Norway with her daughter, Rachel. She and Carl frequently visited their children on the West Coast and also in Iowa. Carl passed away on October 5, 2005. Carl and Lenora were married for over 67 years.
During her life Lenora has enjoyed her family and friends, playing games, crosswords, her computer and laptop, and reading and writing. She wrote a book called “The Way It Was”. This book describes happenings from her life that otherwise may not have been known and is a wonderful legacy for her loved ones. Lenora lived in her apartment until 2011 when she moved into Wellington Place Assisted Living. She celebrated her 100 year birthday there and at Burr Oak Lutheran Church and has enjoyed celebrating her birthday every year since. In 2014 she moved to the nursing home. Lenora always maintained a positive attitude, was sharp mentally and was loved and respected by all. Lenora prayed for every one of her loved ones every night naming each one.
Lenora was preceded in death by her husband Carl Leistikow, an infant son Harlan, her parents Rachel and Elias Hoines, three sisters: Christine (Walter) Granner, Jeannetta (Kasper) Johnson, Anna (Ole) Flatland and two brothers: Elder and Ernest (Edith) Hoines, and one daughter-in-law The Rev. Joyce Dennison.
Lenora is survived by four children: The Rev. James (The Rev. Jan Nesse) Leistikow, Everett, WA; Linda (Larry) Edralin, Shelton, WA; Loren (Barbara) Leistikow, Iowa City, IA; Rachel (Al Leftcourt) Murany, San Diego, CA. Ten grandchildren: Randal ( Kelly) Leistikow, Ann Adair, Jill (Ed) Kahn, Julie Edralin, Jennifer Edralin, Chad (Brianna) Leistikow, Krista (Eric) Schaffer, Nicole (Mitch) Krumwiede, Hans Nesse and Kate (Scott) Lindberg. Twenty two great-grandchildren: Keira and Ashton Leistikow, Dax, Dru, Tate and Rafe Adair, Ryan and Kyle Kahn, William Paugh, Linda Stewart, Paris Primeau, Eva Gibson, Samantha, Kayla and Hannah Schaffer, Karli, Kinsley and Kyler Krumwiede, Jack and Gabriella Leistikow, Franziska and Arlo Lindberg. Sister-in-law: Marlys Hoines, Cresco, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Burr Oak Lutheran Church, 2358 360th Street, Decorah, IA 52101.
