Obituary.
Died, in Fremont township, Winneshiek county, Iowa, July 22, 1898, Philemon Townsend, aged 84 years 4 months and 20 days.
The deceased was born in Albany county. New York, March 2, 1814. In 1845 he came to Stephenson county, Illinois, where he continued to reside until he came to Iowa, except two years he served in the Mexican war. He was united in marriage July 19, 1849, with Miss Maria Smith, who preceded him to the better life, December 24, 1883. In June 1856, he and his companion came to Winneshiek county and located upon the farm where he lived for more than 42 years, and until death released his spirit from the body. Three sons and two daughters remain to mourn the loss of a kind and noble father, two sons, Harvey and Perry and a daughter, Mrs. Sarah Arnold, reside in Strouseton, S. D., Perry and Mrs. Arnold coming to attend the last sad rite to their father. Harvey being absent from home did not get the message of his father’s death in time to come. One son, Jefferson, and a daughter reside here, their father having lived and died at his and their home.
The funeral was at the house, Rev. Hendricks officiating, the interment being in the Kendallville cemetery. The esteem in which the deceased was held was plainly shown by the presence of the people for several miles around who had come together to do honor to the memory of the deceased, most of whom followed the remains to the place of interment.
