Phyllis M. Quass, 77, Of Ossian, Iowa died Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, Iowa. Phyllis Marie was born November 30, 1939 to Pete and Margreth Bertine (Johnson) Hamre in Decorah, Iowa. Phyllis, along with her twin sister, Barbara were born premature and were baptized at the Decorah Hospital. She was later confirmed at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, Iowa. Phyllis attended the Decorah Schools, where she enjoyed being a cheerleader and hanging out with her friends. She graduated in 1958.
Phyllis was united in marriage with Dale Allen Quass on October 1, 1960 at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, Iowa. To this union, five sons were born, Jeffrey Layne, Kevin Allen, Gary Lee, Kyle Layne and Allen.
Phyllis was talented with sewing, knitting, ceramics, flower gardening, and arranging and decorating flowers. She worked as a sales lady for Schroeder’s Clothing in Ossian and Decorah, Tierney’s Clothing in West Union, and for eleven years as a sales lady for Margaret’s in Decorah. Phyllis did a number of other jobs, many were volunteer, such as working at the hospital, the food pantry and the Depot. She attended Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian where she has held many WELCA offices, taught Sunday School and music, helped with Relief Blankets and decorated and assisted with the church events. In the past several years, she enjoyed several mini- vacations and going out with all her friends.
Phyllis is survived by her two sons, Kevin Allen and Gary Lee Quass both of Ossian, Iowa; her twin sister, Barbara Jane (Don) Hamre Berg of Decorah, Iowa; a nephew, John (Lori) Berg of Ames, Iowa; two great- nieces; and a great-nephew.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-four years, Dale Allen; three sons, Jeffrey Layne, Allen and Kyle Layne Quass; and her parents, Pete and Margreth Hamre.
Visitation will be Sunday, October 22, 2017 from 3-7 pm at Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Ossian, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Monday.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am on Monday, October 23, 2017 at Stavanger Lutheran Church, Ossian, Iowa with Rev. Dave Lenth as the Officiant.
Burial will follow at Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery, Ossian, Iowa.
Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Ossian, Iowa is helping the family with the arrangements.
