Joseph Shatek, the son of Joseph and Mary (Komarek) Shatek, was born on April 1, 1926 on the family farm in rural Elma. He attended the Paris Township country school. Joe married Rita Hackman on April 13, 1948 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, and to this union five children were born: Shirley, Allan, David, Ann and Leon. Together, Joe and Rita farmed near Fort Atkinson their entire life raising crops and milking registered Jersey cattle, and later raising Angus and Simmental beef cattle. Joe had a passion for music. At age 19, he purchased a guitar and taught himself how to play without lessons or guidance, then purchased a used violin and later traded the violin for a mandolin, playing his entire life. Later in life, he purchased an electric guitar with an amplifier. He played the guitar and mandolin for enjoyment and family events and celebrations, and Rita and others would chime in singing. Joe loved to play cards, fish, ride motorcycle and spend time with his family. Joe was a long-time Farm Bureau member and received a plaque for his 50th year of membership in 2000. Joe served on the Farm Bureau membership committee, served on St. John’s Parish Council, and was a director of the Farmers Co-op board in Ft. Atkinson for 18 years. Joe also served as chairman of the Winneshiek County Election Board working the local and county elections. Joe and Rita were Amway distributors for 45 years and had fun times at meetings and trips.
