Gertrude Bernatz; former head of nurses here, dies

Gertrude Anderson Bernatz, 68, died at her home In Decorah on Wednesday, Dec. 31.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church where she had been a member most of her life. Pastor Glenn Borreson and the Rev. Paul Christenson officiated. William Kuhlman was organist, Beth Getman was violinist and Karen Nott was the soloist, in addition to congregational hymns.

Burial was at Phelps Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Michael Meyer, Donald Dowe, Michael Daughton, Willis Wangsness, Roy Teetshorn and Michael Ronan. On the floral committee were Joan Sloan, Donis Whalen, Marge Lansing, Marg Ronan, Wanda Bernatz, Mildred Natvig, Ruby Moen, Mary Pat Allen and Hazel Howland.

Mrs. Bernatz was born ln Highland Township on Jan. 29, 1912 to Gilbert and Karen Anderson. She received her education in the Decorah Public Schools and nurses training at the Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago, Ill. After receiving her education, she married Robert Bernatz on/ March 20, 1928 at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. She worked as Director of Nurses at the Winneshiek Memorial Hospital for 16 years.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; a son, Joel of Chelan, Wash.; a daughter, Susan Hoag of Sacramento, Calif.; three grandchildren; and three sisters, Genevieve Kroshus and Marie Wangsness of Decorah; and Kathleen Goodno of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and a son in infancy.
