Norman "Huns" Gunhus, 84, formerly of Ridgeway, IA, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2010 at Sunrise Cottages in Rochester, MN.

Norman was born on August 30, 1925 in Ridgeway, IA, the son of Helmer and Alma (Benson) Gunhus. Norman was baptized and confirmed at Lincoln Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway. Norman attended Ridgeway School and in his senior year, was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. At the age of 18 he was serving his country in the jungles of the South Pacific. Following his discharge, he worked with his parents in the family Hardware and Drug Store in Ridgeway. It was a family owned business of 40 years. Norman then re-enlisted into the U.S. Army and following this discharge, located himself to Miami, FL, and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service.

In 1967, he was united in marriage to Sissel Overgaard. To this union a daughter, Diane was born. They were later divorced. Norman later lived in the Florida Keys where he was employed in the construction business. He also moved there to be closer to the sea, and continue his passion for fishing. In 1983 he returned to northeast Iowa to assist his father, who was in ill health. He eventually accomplished his boyhood dream of having a home in the Northwoods, and continued his fishing conquests. His winters were spent in Minneapolis.

Norman was an active outdoorsman. He had a love of the wilderness, and all animals, especially dogs. He enjoyed walking, music, reading, and to help those in need. He was proud of the fact that after many years of Bible study, he was given a certificate of achievement. He took his handicap of 5 years, and turned it into a time of bringing joy, help, and humor to all he met.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his dear friend, Marlys in 2005.

He is survived by he daughter, Diane (Dale) Richey of Lakeland, FL, and his sister, Eunice Harper of Florida Keys, FL.
