Dorothy P. Arp, age 89, of Decorah, Iowa, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Barthel Order of Eastern Star Home in Decorah.

A family graveside service will be held at Phelps Cemetery in Decorah.

Dorothy Eugena Preiser was born February 17, 1928 in Astoria (Long Island City), New York, the daughter of John and Hermindina [Carol] (Franzen) Preiser.

Dottie met her husband, Herbert Arp, in 1945 and they were united in marriage on August 29, 1948, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Astoria, New York. This union was blessed with two children, Lauraine and David.

Dot and Herb moved to Bergenfield, New Jersey in 1952. Dot worked for the Equitable Life Insurance Company before starting her family and later worked and retired from the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company.

Dottie and Herb moved to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina in 1986 and enjoyed their retirement there for 18 years before moving to Decorah in 2004.

Dorothy always had a love of the outdoors, first at her grandparents’ home in rural Lakewood, New Jersey and the nearby shore and then on family camping and hiking trips. She loved swimming, from childhood days at New York City pools and the Long Island and New Jersey beaches, then in the South Carolina ocean and public pools and finally at the Decorah city and Luther pools. When she could no longer swim, she would often be seen on walks around Vennehjem or Eastern Star. Travel, reading and music were also things she loved. She volunteered at public libraries and at the libraries at Vennehjem and Eastern Star. She enjoyed the music at church, the Metropolitan Opera, Broadway musicals, her Victrola turntable and especially her great-grandchildren’s school concerts. Working on quilts with the First Lutheran ladies was an activity she cherished. Dottie’s relationship with her church, wherever she lived, was a constant source of strength throughout her life.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Herbert on July 16, 2009.

She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Arp of Decorah; her son, David (Candace) Arp of Decorah; two grandchildren: Alison (Steve) Elwood of Decorah and their children, Isabelle, Whitney (Scott) Selix and Morgan (Justin) Thrailkill and their daughter Mabel; and Carrie (Jason) Duranceau and their children Lucas and Eli of San Diego, California.
