Virginia Halverson, age 69, of Decorah, IA, died on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at the Ossian Senior Hospice, in Ossian, IA.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 13, 2017, at the First Lutheran Church, 604 West Broadway, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Chad Huebner presiding. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:00-5:00 p.m., on Sunday, March 12, 2017, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue, Decorah, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Monday morning.

Virginia Ann (Nesteby) Halverson was born on April 30, 1947, the daughter of Albert and Hazel (Leidahl) Nesteby in Decorah, IA. Virginia was baptized at Big Canoe Lutheran Church and confirmed at the Decorah Lutheran Church. Virginia attended rural country school and Decorah Community School. She was united in marriage to Dale Halverson on October 24, 1964, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Virginia stayed at home raising her family and farmed alongside her husband, Dale. Her favorite job was feeding and raising her calves. She also worked at K&S Grocery Store, as a cake decorator and at Marilyn’s Hallmark, until her health declined. Virginia was a member of the First Lutheran Church, and enjoyed volunteering. She also enjoyed having a large garden and flower beds, bowling, trout fishing, and card club. Racing was an activity the family shared for many years. When their cars were on the track, she was faithfully seated in the stands. She enjoyed her many coffee clubs and neighborhood coffee group. Above all, Virginia loved and cherished her family and her grandchildren and the time that she spent with them.

Virginia is survived by her husband: Dale Halverson, Decorah, IA. Two children: Todd “Cavey” (Janelle) Halverson, Decorah, IA, and Denise (Gerad) Voltmer, Ridgeway, IA. Four grandchildren: Kolin, Kasey and Keatyn Krauskopf and Elizabeth Holty. Brother: Donald (Ione) Nesteby, Decorah, IA, and sister, Darlene (Gerald) Schwartzhoff, Dorchester, IA. Sisters-in-law: Geneva Halverson, Decorah, IA, and Elaine (Ronnie) Ryan, Harmony, MN, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Virginia was preceded in death by her son, Scott “Herman” Halverson on February 18, 2006. Her parents: Albert and Hazel (Leidahl) Nesteby. Two half-brothers: Arthur and Duane Nesteby. One half-sister: Iona Welzel. Her father-in-law and mother-in-law: Oscar and Nora (Moen) Halverson. Two brothers-in-law: Roland and Richard Halverson, along with other aunts, uncles and nieces and nephews.
