Dorothy (Hillesland) Sanders, age 92, of Decorah, IA, died on Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Monday, October 31, 2016, at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Ron Pederson presiding. Burial will be in the Calmar Lutheran Cemetery, Calmar, IA.

Visitation will be held after 11:00 a.m., on Monday morning at the Funeral Home.

Dorothy Lorraine (Rasmusen) (Hillesland) Sanders was born on July 29, 1924, the daughter of Emil and Myrtle (Luren) Rasmusen in Decorah, Iowa. Dorothy attended Decorah School and then moved to Calmar when she was in third grade. She graduated from Calmar High School in 1942 and went to work for Northwestern Bell in Calmar for over two years. She married Dalos Hillesland on February 18, 1945, at the Calmar Lutheran Church. They farmed near Decorah, Garnavillo and south of Ossian, until Dalos health forced him to enter the Tuberculosis Center at Oakdale for over six years. They returned to Calmar and bought the Calmar Variety Store in 1961, later re-naming it the D & D Junior Department Store and ran it for twenty-four years before retiring in 1985. After retirement, Dorothy worked at the Bridal Boutique in Decorah, doing alterations. In 1991, Dorothy married Frank Sanders at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Calmar. Dorothy moved to Decorah in 2003. Over the years, Dorothy enjoyed sewing, plastic canvas crafts, counted cross-stitch, puzzles, and dancing with the Swinging Squares.. Dorothy was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Calmar for many years, where she enjoyed going to Bible Study and Ladies Aide.

Dorothy is survived by her sister: Marion (Howard) Benzing, Decorah, IA. Two brothers-in-law: Glen (Arnhild) Hillesland, Ames, IA, and Alton (Harriet) Hillesland, Sydney, MT. One step-son: Maynard ( Ruth) Sanders, Coon Rapids, MN. Sister-in-law: Goldie Hillesland, Calmar, IA. Nieces and nephews: Steve (Carol) Benzing, Dennis (Kristi) Benzing, Tom (Christine) Benzing, David (Georgia) Hillesland, Karla Benzing, Marie Hillesland, Annette (Bill) Edwards, Erick (Brenda) Hillesland, Jim (Sue) Hillesland, Barbara (Greg) Drew, Tom (Marie) Hillesland, Jeff (Sally) Hillesland, Sana (Ken) Keller and Chris (Billie) Hillesland. Along with many great nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents. Her first husband: Dalos Hillesland in December 1989 and her second husband, Frank Sanders in August 1998. Three nephews: Daniel and Michael Hillesland and Ralph Benzing. Brother-in-law: Harvey Hillesland.
