Theodor Lincoln Jacobsen died Aug. 30, 2016, at Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home. A memorial service is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at First Lutheran Church, Decorah. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church, Luther College, or Barthel Eastern Star Nursing Home, all of Decorah.
Born Nov. 7, 1920, in Decorah, to Karl and Florence (Stoddard) Jacobsen. Ted graduated from Luther College in 1942, and was then commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Navy during WWII. He served on a LCT in the South Pacific. He married Freda Struxness May 12, 1944. Ted received his master’s degree in hospital administration from the University of Minnesota, and began his career at Trinity Hospital, Minot, N.D.
Ted spent a lifetime trying to create a medical system that cared for the whole person. Serving as the director of four hospitals throughout the United States, over a 40-year career, he brought his understanding of Christian love to bear in a system that often impersonalized patients.
Ted is survived by his three children: Rev. Dr. Steven Jacobsen (Edie) of Decorah, Mark (deceased 1950), Julia Allen (Tom) of St. Anthony, Minn. and Karen Hansen (Paul) of Orono, Minn.; as well as his six grandchildren: Peter Jacobsen (Lee), Karl Jacobsen (Kiersten), Erik Allen (Jennifer), Jeffrey Allen (Alison), Annika Van Dyne (Zach) and Chris Hansen (Jordan); and 7 great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and many close friends.
