Ed Hogenson, age 96, of rural Decorah, died Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Traditions in West Union, IA.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the Springfield Lutheran Church, 1969 Middle Calmar Road, rural Decorah, with Pastor Nancy Solomonson presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00- 6:00 p.m. Friday, August 26, 2016 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue, Decorah, IA, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the Church on Saturday.

Edward Kenneth Hogenson was born on March 31, 1920, the son of Anton and Anna (Halverson) Hogenson in Decorah, IA. He was baptized and later confirmed in Norwegian at Springfield Lutheran Church. Ed attended Winneshiek County country school. He enlisted in the Army at the age of 21, and served in World War II. He was stationed in France, Germany and Africa; serving for 50 months. He was a gun crewman in the field artillery and coastal artillery; receiving two battle stars for major battles. He was discharged in Dec. 1945. Ed married Evelyn Yocum on March 5, 1948, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. He farmed for most of his life along with working at the Decorah Post Office from 1964-1984. He also served as both director and president of the Decorah Federal Land Bank Association. Ed was a deacon and active member at Springfield Lutheran Church, member of the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977, Bernatz Symonds American Legion Post #163, and the Farm Bureau. His hobbies included playing cards and cribbage, traveling, telling jokes and stories and going to the boat to gamble. He was a huge sports fan and followed the Hawkeyes, Cyclones and UNI Panthers closely. Ed also enjoyed and loved his grandchildren and their activities.

Ed is survived by his five children: Becky (Darrell) Sersland, Decorah, IA; Barb Bennett, Ridgeway, IA; Tom Hogenson, Oskaloosa, IA; Terry (Theresa) Hogenson, Muscatine, IA; and Beth (Ken) Koster, Centralia, MO. Ten grandchildren: Kelly Sersland, Keri (Jeff) Fye, Karla (Dave) Goertzen, Matt Hogenson, Brianne Hogenson, Katelyn Hogenson, Ashley (Zak) Watson, Morgan Hogenson, Andy Koster and Emily Koster. Five great grandchildren: Stella, Alexa and Owen Goertzen, Collin and Dylan Pasker, along with many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn on August 25, 2015. His parents: Anton and Anna Hogenson. His father-in-law and mother-in-law: Roy and Beatrice Yocum. Granddaughter: Tara Bennett. Four brothers: Clarence, Thomas, Arnold and Elmer Hogenson. Sisters: Gladys Lien and Margaret Wold.
