I, Geneva (Huber) Becker, came into this world on February 2, 1922, in the NE bedroom of my parents', John J. and Susanna (Kapler) Huber, farm home west of Spillville. I was baptized into the Catholic faith. I attended country school, parochial school in Spillville, and graduated from 8th grade country school. I attended Spillville High School for 2 years, and graduated from Ossian Public High School. Fond memories include walking home from school looking for buttercups along the creek, jumping over the creek going to school, finding rosehips to eat (thank God there were no poisonous spray at that time), and waiting “almost forever” for “black horse” to ripen. I enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, splitting wood, shoveling snow, softball, basketball, baking especially “kuchen”. I especially enjoyed designing and sewing my wedding dress, and spending time with my family. While a senior, our basketball team played at the State Tournament in Des Moines. I joined the Cadet Nurse Corps at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sioux City, IA. One of the purposes of the Corps was to free those already RNs from military service if they so wished. We were required to work in the nursing profession for the duration of World War II. Leander Becker and I were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Hampton, IA on October 28, 1946. We were blessed with 6 children Drusella, Pamela, Jed (Joyce Hubka) Becker, Melvin (Janet Burrows) Becker, Janela (Dave) Hubka, Lynela Becker (Bernerd) Allen, 9 grandchildren Marie (Jamie) Freeman, Leandra Hubka, Irissa (Mark) Ryant; Callum, MaKayla, Kindall and Randall Hubka; Kristina and Aiden Allen; and 2 great grandchildren Sydney and Melanie Freeman. We farmed near Ossian and Burr Oak before purchasing the Shield farm and our home town was now Cresco. My brothers and sisters Viola (William) Tupy, Richard (Mae Herold) Huber, Matilda (Greg) Gebel, Daniel (Elizabeth Glaser) Huber, Lucille (William) Wall, John (Marie Dietzenbach) Huber, Angela (Ambrose "Bill") Ellis, I thank God for them all and all my ancestors, friends.
