Published: January 14, 1983

Andrew W. Fleischer, who contributed in the early part of the century to the development of the modern stethoscope and the bloodpressure monitoring device, died Tuesday night at the Van Dyke Convalescent Home in Ridgewood, N.J. He was 101 years old.

Mr. Fleischer, a native of Racine, Wis., had been associated with Becton Dickinson & Company of Paramus, N.J., for 50 years after he sold his Physicians Supply Company in 1921 to Becton Dickinson, a major medical-equipment supplier.

He had been a pharmacist and was 31 years old when he developed the blood-pressure instrument.

He also improved the stethoscope, experimenting until he came up with an instrument that greatly reduced extraneous sounds and permitted physicians to monitor heart sounds more accurately. He first marketed the Fleischer stethoscope in 1913.

He directed Becton Dickinson's research and development department until retiring in 1974. Mr. Fleischer is survived by two daughters, Florence Neglia and Elizabeth Bender, both of Ridgewood, and two grandchildren.

Submitter's Note: Andrew W. Fletcher was born in Racine, Wisconsin on Feb. 23, 1881. Andrew is the son of Theodore Fleischer and Elizabeth Meyer. During Andrew's childhood his father Theodore had a furniture and undertaking business in Ossian, Iowa.
