Iowa Plain Dealer February 14, 1896, LP C3

The Ridgeway news has been rather scarce of late. Everything has been moving along quietly.

Our people were startled on Monday about 11 a.m. with the sad news that Mr. Chester D. Webster, a young man of about 30 from Canton, Minn., who had been working for Mr. Ed. Briggs in his butcher shop, was dead. Mr. Webster went with Briggs to the slaughter house to help dress a beef. He was taken ill at once and Mr. Briggs told him to sit down. In about two or three minutes, Mr. Webster, moaned a little which attracted Briggs’ attention and he saw he was very pale and could not answer a question asked him. Briggs then placed him in an easy position and ran up town (about 75 rods) and called a physician, and on reaching the man, he was breathing his last, being past all help, Cause of death cerebral hemorrage.{sp} His relatives at Canton were telegraphed for and reached here about four or five the same afternoon. The remains were taken to Canton on Tuesday morning for interment.

Our community was shocked Monday at the sudden death of Mr. Chester Webster, of Canton, Minn., who was working for Mr. J. Edw. Briggs. In company with Mr. Briggs he had gone to the slaughter house to kill some beefs and while at work suddenly put his hands to his head as if in great pain. Mr. Briggs caught him and asked him if he were sick but receiving no reply speedily came for Dr. Lewis who was soon beside the unfortunate man but he was past help and only lived about 5 or 10 minutes after the arrival of the Dr. His folks were telephoned for and came over the same day and took the remains to Canton Tuesday for burial.
