Jon grew up in Decorah and Freeport. He played baseball at school, announced halftime at football games, acted in plays, and was a member of FFA. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1951 and attended Luther College. He served in the United States Army as a radio repair instructor at Fort Sill, Oklahoma from 1953 to 1955. Jon married Shirley Ann Erickson at Decorah Lutheran Church on October 14, 1956. The couple had two children, Tammy Ann and Craig Jon. They moved to Freeport in 1960 where they built a house, raised a family, and lived until moving back to Decorah in 2012.

Following his father Art’s footsteps, Jon worked at Anundsen’s Publishing Company for over 50 years. He was a printer and foreman for Anundsen’s and the Decorah Newspapers. He enjoyed gardening, square dancing, camping, photography, and computers. Jon and Shirley loved to travel; they took many bus trips around the country as well as longer vacations in Mexico, Spain, and Israel. He loved his family, friends, and pulling people’s legs. A lifelong member of Decorah Lutheran Church, Jon was active with the Sunday school as a teacher and superintendent. He was involved with numerous other volunteer activities at the church.
