Elvin Winnaberg, age 91, of Cresco, IA, was called by his Lord and savior Jesus Christ to his eternal rest, Saturday, March 26, 2016, at Hawkeye Care Center in Cresco, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 404 N Elm Street, Cresco, IA, with Pastor Jeff Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Fremont Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, at the funeral home.

Elvin Julius Winnaberg was born December 7, 1924, son of George and Gusta (Moe) Winnaberg in Kendallville, IA. Elvin grew up in the Fremont Township Lutheran Church area. He was baptized by Rev H.M. Norman and confirmed by Rev O.C. Brenna. He attended country school in the Fremont Township area. After he completed school, he worked as a farmhand until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1945. He served in the Northern Pacific of Japan, which became Korea. Elvin attained the rank of T/3 Staff Sergeant in the Ordinance Department. In 1946, Elvin was discharged from active duty. He then went into farming on his own near Cresco, IA. Elvin had an easy way of talking to people. He was well liked by most that met him. Elvin was known for his amazing memory of dates and history. He was an avid reader and was a member of the Cresco VFW and American Legion.

Surviving Elvin is his sister, Julia (Robert) Halweg of Baraboo, WI, cousins, and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents and sister, Marie in 2001.
