Manuel “Manny” Joseph Madrigal was born on March 18, 1932 in Holy City, Iowa, to Luis and Luisa (Navarro) Madrigal. He graduated from St. Ambrose Academy in Davenport, Iowa in 1950. After high school, he completed a year of college at St. Ambrose College. Shortly thereafter, he left Davenport to play semi-pro baseball for the House of David as a right-handed pitcher in Texas. Injury cut his baseball career short so he returned to Davenport to work for Brammer Manufacturing playing basketball for the men’s AAU team. Little did he know he would meet his future wife, Mary Ann McGeough while she was playing for the Brammer women’s AAU team. They were married on May 28, 1955 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Iowa City, IA. Their first daughter Susan was born shortly thereafter. Manny then pursued a career as a barber while attending Cedar Rapids Barber College. During Barber school he continued to keep his love of sports alive by playing in various city league sports. Meanwhile son’s Dino, Tim, Larry, Jon and daughter Lisa were born to become his biggest fans. He worked for Swift Barbershop where he eventually became sole owner. By coincidence it was also close to his favorite passion of shooting pool at the Cue & Cushion on Locust Street in Davenport, where he played professional pool players Steve Mizerak and Joe Balsis and held his own. This was followed by the birth of Charles and Andrea, to form his own team of 8. Most of the children attended Assumption High School, where Manny and Mary Ann enjoyed watching them in various sporting events. After the death of their son Tim, Joe Whitty of Happy Joe’s approached the couple to purchase one of their franchise stores in Decorah, IA. They moved half the family to Northeast Iowa where they have been the Happy Joes owners for the past 37 years.
Manny continued to stay athletic while playing slow pitch softball and played in various pool leagues around the Decorah area. In later years he enjoyed attending his grandkids various athletic events. He also enjoyed spending time with his three great grandchildren. Manny’s many loves included: spending Thanksgiving in Davenport, IA with extended family, watching Notre Dame, Iowa Hawkeyes, Brooklyn Dodgers and Chicago Cubs baseball. Building bird houses and walking his dog Zoey at Luther College were other things he enjoyed. Other favorites included - going to auctions, visiting with the attendees and eating the various assortment of homemade desserts, visiting and teasing the grocery store and bank girls, as well as handing out mints with a smile.
Manny is survived by his wife Mary Ann; their seven children: Susan (Michael) Keith of Bettendorf, IA, Dino (Sandy) Madrigal of Davenport, IA, Larry (Janet) Madrigal of Joliet, IL, Jon (Marcia) Madrigal of Decorah, Lisa (Dan) Coate of Polk City, IA, Charlie Madrigal of Denver, CO and Andrea (Ron) Heins of Decorah, seven grandchildren: Jason (Kristi) Briggs of Mesa, AZ, Jennifer (Garrett) Weymouth of Glen Ellyn, IL, Michael Madrigal of Chicago, IL, Matthew Madrigal of Champaign, IL, Elizabeth (Ryan) Graf of Milwaukee, WI, Rachel Madrigal (fiancé Ryan Grenko) of Cedar Falls, IA and Anna Madrigal of Decorah, IA; three great-grandchildren: Elsa Weymouth, Alex Weymouth and Colton Briggs; and his sister, Dolores Juarez of Davenport, IA.
He was preceded in death by son, Tim Madrigal, on July 24, 1976, parents Luis and Luisa Madrigal, sister Julia Torres, brother Anthony Navarro, sister Arlene Madrigal, and mother and father in-law Bernard and Bernice McGeough.
