Linus Kriener, age 88, of Fort Atkinson and Protivin, Iowa, died Thursday, November 5, 2015 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehab Center in New Hampton, IA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 14, 2015 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, IA Rev. Nick March presiding, burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 13, 2015 at the St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, IA and also after 9:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Schluter Balik Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Linus Nick Kriener was born on May 4, 1927, on the family farm southwest of Fort Atkinson, the son of Peter and Mary (Kuennen) Kriener. Linus attended St. Luke’s Catholic School and graduated in 1941. He served proudly in the United States Army from July 1954 to 1956. He especially enjoyed his tour in Germany where he was able to connect with many Kriener relatives. When he returned home he took a course in telephone maintenance in Rochester, New York. After this he was employed by the Fort Atkinson Telephone Company for twenty-five years and also helped on the family farms. Linus lived in the Fort Atkinson/Protivin area his entire life. He always encouraged his brothers to get out in the spring and plant and was there to help harvest in the fall, driving the grain cart. Linus enjoyed fishing and fixing any and all electronic devices and machinery. He was a great cook and an avid gardener; always planting his potatoes on Good Friday. Reading, playing cards and engaging in a good conversation about his German heritage, or the past, always put a smile on his face and a twinkle in his blue eyes. Linus believed in hard work and saving for a rainy day. He loved and appreciated all phone calls and visits by friends and relatives, especially in recent years after moving to New Hampton. While a resident at Kensington Assisted Living, Linus took great pride in leading the rosary with a group of friends. He continued to pray faithfully each day. Linus was blessed to be cared for by family and friends and the very compassionate staff at New Hampton Nursing Home and Rehabilitation. His stories made long days short, and his great knowledge of spices and their medicinal purposes were years ahead of his time. Linus never had a harsh word for others and truly saw the blessings in each new day. He was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church and Rosary Society. He was a member of the Huber Steffes American Legion Post #672 and the Turkey River VFW Post #3902.
Linus is survived by his two sisters Anita Busta, Fort Atkinson and Eleanor Mracek, Protivin. Four brothers: Conrad (Kathleen) Kriener, Peter (Diane) Kriener and Jerome (Madonna) Kriener, all of Fort Atkinson, and Herman (Greta) Kriener of Decorah, Iowa. Sisters-in-law Anastasia Kriener and Rosemary Kriener of Fort Atkinson, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Linus was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Mary Kriener. Five brothers: Cyril in 1998, Francis in 1999, Ignatius in 2002, Leo in 2012 and Lawrence in infancy in 1945. Brothers and sister-in-law included Reuben Mracek, Godlove Busta and Pauline Kriener. A niece Annette Kriener and two nephews Alan Kriener and Peter Kriener, Jr. Until we meet again.
