Dorothy was born June 27, 1929, in Spillville, the daughter of Louis and Clara (Wagner) Kalec. She was the oldest of three children. She moved to Mason City at the age of 14, where she found work as a maid at the residence of General Hanford MacNider. Later she attended Hamilton Business College and worked at various doctor’s offices. She married Robert E. Walters Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, 1949, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. They made Mason City their home for almost 60 years and raised three sons.

They had many close friends and especially enjoyed dancing at the Surf Ballroom, playing 500, and traveling to visit family and friends. Dorothy had many dear friends from her Social Hour Club as well. She is most remembered for being a loving mother, grandma and wonderful mother-in-law, homemaker and close friend. Her calling in life was taking loving care of others – first her children and grandchildren, then later her parents, an aunt and uncle, and finally her husband. Her family will miss her fried chicken, desserts and canned peaches and cherries, along with jellies and kolaches. She was an excellent seamstress and made her own draperies as well as clothing; most famous were her flannel pajamas for everyone in the family. She also loved embroidery and made more pillowcases and dish towels than her family could ever use. She will be dearly missed.

Dorothy is survived by three sons: Rod (Kris) Walters, Gary (Patty) Walters and Kevin (Carol) Walters; eight grandchildren: Alex (Rebecca), Ted (Jillian), Aaron (Allison), Rachel (Jason), Adam (Bekah), Christopher, Nate and Morgan; three great-grandchildren: Eloise, Nora and Oliver; one brother, Ray (Jude) Kalec; and in-laws: Shirley Lent, Karl Walters and Etsuko Kalec.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Clara; her loving husband, Robert (Bob),in 2009; a daughter, in infancy, Karen Ann; and a brother, Richard Kalec.
