Born on April 8, 1925, Festina, Iowa, Marcella Mary was the daughter of Edward and Anna (Schmitt) Hackman. She attended St. Mary’s School in Festina. Because of scoliosis, she did not have to help with the field work. It was Marcella’s job to tend the children, cook, clean, help milk cows and keep the house in order while her mother and siblings did the outdoor work. Marcella’s father died when she was sixteen and she stayed home the following year to help with the work. Marcella had always wanted to enter the convent. She entered St. Rose Convent on September 3, 1942. During her senior year of high school at St. Rose, her sister Agatha (Sister Phyllis Ann) joined her in the postulant class. They have celebrated vows and jubilees together ever since.

Marcella was received into the novitiate on August 12, 1946 and was given the name Sister Anice. She later returned to her baptismal name. She made first profession of vows on August 12, 1948 and final vows on August 9, 1954.

Beginning her active ministry as a teacher, Sister Marcella served in elementary schools in Iowa and Wisconsin for thirty-four years, including six years each at St. Mary’s Ridge, Wisconsin, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa and five years at Sherrill, Iowa. For thirteen years, she also served as principal of the school. After leaving the classroom, she earned certification as a Catholic chaplain and was engaged in pastoral ministry at Osage, Iowa, before moving to Guttenberg, Iowa, where Sister Marcella ministered as a Director of Religious Education and Pastoral Minister for seven years. From 1994-2000 she was a member of the Pastoral Care Staff at St. Francis Medical Center (Mayo Clinic Health System—Franciscan Healthcare) in La Crosse. She retired to St. Rose Convent in 2000 and to Villa St. Joseph in 2008

Community members, family and friends will remember Sister Marcella as a peacemaker, a lover of God’s creation and a woman of prayer who served as God’s instrument to others. She was sensitive and caring with the elderly and the sick, the grieving and the poor. She radiated her faith to those around her. Caring for others and bringing Christ to people, whether in schools, parishes or hospitals, was what brought richness to her life. Sister Marcella enjoyed reading, listening to jokes and being with family and friends. Some of her happiest memories were of family get-togethers.

Sister Marcella is survived by her religious community, including her sister, Sister Phyllis Ann Hackman, FSPA, La Crosse, three other sisters: Irene Shatek, New Hampton, Iowa, Lucille Kruse, Ossian, Iowa, and Phyllis (Duane) Einwalter, Fort Atkinson, Iowa, two brothers: Paul (Betty) Hackman, Calmar, and Norbert (Mary) Hackman, Fort Atkinson, sister-in-law: Florence Hackman, brother-in-law: Joe Shatek and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Othmar, her sister, Rita Shatek and her brothers-in-law, Wesley Shatek and Art Kruse.
