Leona Winter, age 88 of St. Lucas, IA passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at New Hampton Nursing and Rehab in New Hampton surrounded by her family.
Leona Winter was born on May 9, 1926 to Henry and Clara (Rausch) Hackman on the Hackman family farm south of Ft. Atkinson. She attended St. Luke’s Catholic School in St. Lucas. After receiving her formal education, Leona continued working on the family farm. On June 19, 1946, Leona was united in marriage to Clarence Winter at St. Luke’s Catholic Church. The couple made their home in rural Hawkeye where they raised their five children Diane, Ken, Marv, Leo and Rich. Leona then moved to St. Lucas in 1991 where she resided the remainder of her life. She was a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church and a member of the Rosary Society. She enjoyed gardening, reading, long walks, playing cards and the accordion. But her true pride and joy were her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.
Left to honor her memory are her children; Diane Franzen of Waucoma, IA, Ken (Pat) Winter of Waverly, IA, Marv (Barb) Winter of New Hampton, IA, Rich (Amy) Winter of Decorah, IA; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; her sister, Hilaria Kipp of Decorah, IA; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Holthaus of Cresco, IA; her brothers-in-law, Linus (Doris) Winter, Roger Moellers and Zeno Kappas and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence Winter; her son, Leo Winter; her siblings, Hilda (Carl) Brandsmeier, Rose Hackman, Hugo (Mildred) Hackman, Carl Hackman, Adolph Hackman, Dolora (Julian) Sabelka and Edwin Kipp.
