Loretta Denyse Running, age 93, died Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah.

A Memorial Mass will be performed on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, followed by a light lunch.

Loretta lived life with her characteristic grace and no small dose of humor. She was so funny! Her mischievous wit sparked fun and laughter wherever she was. Her spunky independence was inspiring. Her biggest vice? Chocolate. Her home impeccably mirrored her love of art, history and travel. Delightfully, her motto was "Keep sparkling!" She could not have been a more devoted wife and mother or a more loyal friend to so many. She could be surprisingly tough. And she was so much fun.

Her signature response to a show of gratitude was "Just say thank you."

Thank you.

Loretta was born on October 22, 1921 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, the daughter of Joseph and Medora Mondou. She married Carl Lynne Running of Decorah in 1944. They lived in Chicago and Deerfield, Illinois. She and Carl raised two children, created a warm and beautiful home, traveled the world and lovingly collected folk and fine art. Loretta was active in local clubs and politics.

They moved to Decorah in 1988. Loretta was a member of Saint Benedict's Parish Rosary Society and the Sacred Heart Circle. She was a member of Travel Club, Coterie and Red Hat Society, as well as a volunteer tour guide at Vesterheim.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Claire Consolmagno; and her husband, Carl Running on September 25, 1998.

She is survived by her daughter, Sally Running of Portland, Maine; her son, James (Laura) Running of Mundelein, Illinois; three grandchildren: Jaclyn (Jake) Ryan, James Running and Erik Running; two great grandchildren: Kelly and Lucas Ryan of Mundelein, Illinois; her sister, Yvette Jensen, Wilbraham, Massachusetts; her niece, Donna Ryan of Springfield, Massachusetts and her nephew, John (Robin) Jensen of Wilbraham, Massachusetts.

Heartfelt thanks to her wonderful friends, Mary Wagner and Mary Jane Maly.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Aase Haugen Senior Services, 4 Ohio Street, Decorah Iowa 52101
