Another memorial service and interment will follow on February 17th at Greenfield Hill Congregational Church and Memorial Garden in Fairfield, CT.

Danny Frederick (Dan) Huebner was born on May 16, 1931, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the oldest son of Fred and Irene (Burns) Huebner. He was married to the late Bonnie Jean (Westby) Huebner on May 14, 1955 at the Lutheran Stone Church in Houston, Minnesota. They had one child, Cynthia Jean (Huebner) Alan.

He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota, and earned both a Masters Degree and a Professional Degree in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 10, 1958. He served in both the Air Force and A.F. Reserves, earning the rank of Captain, was honorably discharged on June 6, 1972.

Dan retired as Vice Chairman of what is now the Northrup Grumman Corporation. Before joining Grumman, he served in senior management at the General Electric Company, primarily in the aeronautics business as head of NASA satellite systems and nuclear systems division for GE in the space program.

Dan also served as a Director on the boards for several companies including the Grumman Corporation, the Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company, the Centennial Insurance Company, the Atlantic Specialty Insurance Company, the GreenPoint Financial Corporation, and recently as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum in Decorah.

He was a dedicated and honored Trustee of Vesterheim. In 2013, Dan received Den Høyeste Ære (The Highest Honor) from Vesterheim, being only its third recipient since 1993, for his distinguished service to the museum and its members. Dan’s support of Vesterheim as a member, donor, and Trustee included full funding for the renovation of the Westby-Torgerson Education Center, named after his late wife’s Norwegian family, and creation of the Dan and Bonnie Huebner Westby-Torgerson Education Center Endowment that covers continued maintenance of the facility.

Dan practiced what he called “living giving” in order to see, in his lifetime, the positive effects of his charitable work, and he was an active and generous supporter of numerous causes. He established the Bonnie Westby Huebner Endowed Chair in Education and Technology at the University of Minnesota. He also funded the purchase of fifteen vital sign measurement units for use by the Winneshiek Medical Center Home Health and Hospice program, in addition to funding renovations and facilities there. He was a generous supporter of renovations for the Lutheran Stone Church in Houston, Minnesota, and a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, Dan himself earning the rank of Eagle Scout in his youth. Over the years he made many significant donations anonymously, and enjoyed quietly witnessing the positive impact of those good works.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie on August 8, 2005, his parents and sister Patsy Tjaden.

Dan is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Jean (Huebner) Alan, and her husband, Larry, of Storrs, Connecticut; a grandson, Eric Huebner Alan, and his wife Sarah, of Potsdam, New York; a granddaughter, Dana Westby Alan, and her fiancé Greg Owens, of Watertown, Massachusetts; and his two brothers, Gerald Huebner his wife Joan of Sun City Center, Florida and Ronald Huebner, and his wife, Goldie of Dunedin, Florida.

Family members wish to express special thanks for the loving care Dan received from the staff at Aase Haugen Home, and the staff of Winneshiek Medical Center Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions are given to the Dan and Bonnie Huebner Westby-Torgerson Education Center Endowment at the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, P.O. Box 379, 502 W. Water Street, Decorah, Iowa, 52101.
