Ossian- Services for Henry Klisart, 89, who died Thursday, were held Monday in St. Francis Catholic Church.

Henry Klisart Dies at Ossian

OSSIAN—Henry T. Klisart, 89, retired Ossian hardware dealer, died Thursday, May 4, at the Decorah hospital where he had been a patient for three weeks He suffered a broken hip in a fall on April 12 and failed to rally from the injury. Mr. Klisart’s death occurred just nine hours before his 90th birthday anniversary.

Funeral service were conducted at 10 a. m. Monday, May 8, in St. Francis de Sales church by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. M. J. Thiltgen. Burial was in the church cemetery with the Rev E. J. Frost officiating at the graveside services. Pallbearers were L. H. Frerich, Andrew Dessel, Cyril Figge, Philip Timp, Leonard Wagner and B. J. Eimers.

Ossian’s business houses were closed during the funeral services.

Henry T. Klisart was born May 5, 1860, at Williamsburg, Pa., a son of Henry and Magdalen (Kuehn) Klisart. When he was six weeks old he accompanied his parents to this vicinity, settling on a farm near Festina. At an early age he decided to follow the hardware trade and secured employment in a hardware store at West Union. He spent 10 years at this position and then decided to go into business for himself. He came to Ossian and purchased the Sawyer hardware store in the spring of 1889. At that time the store was located in the building now occupied by the Frank Peyer tavern.

Mr. Klisart operated his hardware in this location until 1889. At that time he erected the present brick building in which the store is located today.

He operated the business for many years. Since his retirement the store has been owned and operated by his sons. Since July, 1947, it has been owned by his son, Gus Klisart.

On October 15, 1889, H. T. Klisart and Miss Mary Elizabeth Schupanitz were married in St. Mary’s church at Festina. They made their home in Ossian and became the parents of seven children, five of whom survive. They are Celia and Savine, at home, Leander of Strawberry Paint Gus of Ossian and Rose (Mrs. Harold Fredrick) of Strawberry Point.

Two sons preceded him in death, Edward of Iowa Falls and Herbert of Ossian.

Mrs. Klisart also preceded her husband in death on August 22, 1948, after they had been married almost 59 years.

Mr. Klisart is also survived by 14 grandchildren, one sister, Sister M. Veronica of St. Rose Convent, Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse, Wis., and two great grandchildren, Margaret Ann Klisart of Ossian and Mary Sue Sullivan of Iowa Falls.

Among the relatives from a distance who attended the funeral on Monday were the following: Mrs. Florence Klisart and Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Sullivan and Mary Sue of Iowa Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hammond of Cory, Pa., Victor Klisart of Frewsburg, N. Y., Christie Schultz of Council Bluffs, Lena Bucheit of Davenport, the Rev. H. A. Holthaus and Mr. and Mrs. John Scheier of Dubuque, Christine Schultz of Council Bluffs, and relatives from Lawler, Clermont, Decorah, Calmar, Festina and Cresco.
