Marcella Barr, age 99, of Calmar, IA, died on Monday, January 26, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society, in West Union, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, January 29, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Home, 201 Hall Street, in West Union, IA, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Calmar, IA.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m., on Thursday at the Good Samaritan Home in West Union, IA, with the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, in Calmar, IA, handling the arrangements.

Marcella Agnes (Houdek) Barr was born on June 9, 1915, the daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Krall) Houdek, in Fort Atkinson, IA. Marcella attended country school in Conover before going to high school in Spillville and Charles City. She was united in marriage to Charles Barr on April 29, 1933. In her early years of marriage Marcella worked at Bucheit Produce in Calmar and in the latter years she was a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking & baking and lived in her own apartment until she moved into the nursing home four years ago. Her hobbies included doing Word Search puzzles, playing bingo, and taking part in the activities at the nursing home. She loved flowers and watching her favorite game show Wheel of Fortune.

Marcella is survived by her daughter: Joan Martin, Good Samaritan Home, West Union, IA. Son: Roger Barr, Northwood, IA. Four grandchildren: Patricia (Tom) Price, Waterloo, IA, Donna Martin, Calmar, IA, Charles (Marlene) Barr, Rochester, MN, and Debbie Higley, Northwood, IA. One sister: Doris Erbe, Simi Valley, CA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews, as well as her furry beloved Great Granddaughter, a little Yorkie named Lilly.

Marcella was preceded in death by her parents: Thomas and Catherine (Krall) Houdek. Her husband: Charles Barr. Two brothers: Adolph (Virginia) Houdek and Virgil (Evelyn) Houdek. One sister: Alys (Arthur) Bitler. One son-in-law: Robert Martin.

She will be dearly missed by her family.
