Postville Review, Sat., 27 Jan. 1894.

Ossian- Samuel Hunter died at his home Sunday afternoon, Jan. 21st, after an illness of but a few weeks. Some weeks since he had contracted a severe cold, followed by a hard cough, which reduced his system to such an extent that heart failure resulted. He was one of the oldest settlers, having resided at his late residence since 1855. By his industry he had accumulated a good competence, but some years since had retired from active farming.

He was universally respected by his neighbors and was always ready to do what he could for them in case of sickness or misfortune. He was a kind husband and loving father. He was raised a Presbyterian and retained that faith up to the time of his death.

Samuel Hunter was born in Belfast, Ireland, Nov. 12, 1819. during his early life he worked at his trade, that of papermaker, in his native city. In 18__ he was married to Margaret Gammel, and as a result of this union two children were born, a son and daughter. In 1843 he emigrated to Canada, where his wife died in May of the same year. He moved to New York state in 1850 where he was united in marriage to Margaret Lyon. To them were born four children, two girls and two boys, all of whom survive their father, and all were present at the funeral. After a residence of five years in New York they moved to the present homestead in Iowa and remained there to the time of his death. One daughter of his first marriage survives her father.

The funeral occurred from the U.B. church at this place, under the Auspices of the Masonic fraternity, of which he was an active and worthy member. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Rose, of the M.E. church, and was well received. Ellison Orr, of Postville, acted as master of ceremonies, and William Neiling, of Monona, acted as marshal.

The friends of the deceased and the fraternity wish to return thanks to all who assisted in his last sickness and sad rites at the funeral.
