Postville Review, Fri., 20 Apr. 1900.
Margaret Lyons Hunter was born in Ireland, Tyrone Co., Feb. 2, 1828, and died at her home in Bloomfield township, Winneshiek Co., Iowa, Tuesday April 3rd, 1900, aged 72 years, 2 months and 1 day. She came from Ireland to Canada in 1848, and later removed to New York State, where she was united in marriage to Samuel Hunter, April 23rd, 1850, and for forty-four years they shared in the joys of this life. Four children were born to them, two boys and two girls, three of whom survive. Mr. and Mrs. Hunter removed from the state of New York to Iowa in 1855, and settled on government land, one mile south of Castalia, where she has since resided. Mr. Hunter preceded her by six years, having departed this life Jan. 24, 1894. Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Hunter has made her home with her children, whose loving hearts and willing hands cheerfully ministered to her need.
Mrs. Hunter was converted in early life and united with the Presbyterian church and remained a faithful member of the same until a recent date, when she united with the Methodist church of Castalia. To her Pastor, Rev. C. A. Parkin, of Calmar, who visited her in her last sickness, she gave clear and positive evidence of her preparation for the home beyond, and even expressed her desire to depart. A kind neighbor, loving mother and faithful Christian has been taken, and a large circle of friends sympathize with those who have no hope, for she has entered into rest, and in her upward flight she has not closed the gate of pearl, but they stand open wide and through them mother's hands beckon dear ones to come.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist church at Castalia, Thursday, April 5th, conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. A. Parkin, Rev. Barton of Postville preaching the sermon, after which the remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband in the Castalia Cemetery.
(NOTE: Though this obit gives her given name as Margaret and her birth year as 1828, WPA records and the photo of her gravestone clearly show the given name as Margret and her birth year as 1829. The gravestone photo is on the IGPP in Pleasant View Cemetery.)
