Donald J. White, age 77, of Decorah, IA, died peacefully surrounded by his family, Saturday evening, December 20, 2014 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 27, 2014 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery in Decorah.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Friday, December 26 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m., one hour before the service, at the church.
Donald James White was born December 1, 1937 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Earl L. and Mabel E. (Thornton) White. He graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1956.
Don was united in marriage to Marion H. “Mamie” Ott on April 26, 1958 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa. This union was blessed with five children: Steve, Susie, David, Cheri and DJ.
Don joined his mother Mabel in her restaurant, Mabe’s Pizza. Mabe’s Pizza had grown a reputation for pizza cut into squares. Don and Maime took over the restaurant in 1981. Don’s oldest son, Steve and his wife Connie have had the business since 1999.
Don was united in marriage to Beverly L. (Bruening) Ruen on September 20, 1996.
He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, and longtime members of Oneota and Silvercrest Golf and Country Clubs. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, socializing and playing cards.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Mabel; Mamie on January 1, 1993 and Bev on September 19, 2012; and his three brothers, Ervin, Gerald and Richard.
Don is survived by his five children: Steve White (Connie) of Decorah, IA, Susie White of Lakeville, MN, David White of Farmington, MN, Cheri Zwart of Farmington, MN, DJ White (Wendy) of Farmington, MN; grandchildren: Megan and Eric Svestka, Devin, Collin, Mitchell White, Kayla, Aaron and Christopher Pospisil, Jordan and Dava White, Madison Shurte and Drew Zwart, Breanna Pratte, Nicholas and Kylie White; two great-grandsons, Drake Pospisil and Felix Smith; five step-children: Duanne Ott Thiel (John) of Dyersville, IA, Dr. David Ruen (Susan) of Mason City, IA, Karla Koenig of Waunakee, WI, Kevin Ruen of Branierd, MN and Lea Daniels (Douglas) of Virginia Beach, VA; step-grandchildren: Michael Ott, Amanda Pins, Jessica Novotny, Cameron Ruen, Brandon Ruen, Aaron Ruen, Devon Ruen, Ellison Ruen, Kelly Koenig II (Abby), Karin Koenig, Richard Ruen, Erica Ruen, Michael Ruen, Marshall Daniels; step great-grand children: Quincy Ott, Ryan Ott, Avery Pins, Adalyn Pins, Juliana Pins, Faith Furst, AJ Ruen, Sophia Novotny and Kate Koenig.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to WMC Hospice, 901 Montgomery Street, Decorah, IA 52101.
