Spillville, Ia., Oct. 14 - Funeral services for James W. Swella were held Saturday afternoon at the Calmar Methodist church. Interment was made in the Community cemetery west of Calmar.

Mr. Swella was born in Europe on Feb. 1, 1848, and came to America in September, 1853, with his parents. They settled on a farm purchased from the government and were among the first pioneers of this vicinity. Wheat and other farm products were hauled overland by ox teams to McGregor as there were no railroads.

In July, 1874, he was united in marriage to Caroline Bechel. Besides his widow he leaves the following children: Mrs. Louise Hendrickson, Minneapolis; Ed. F., Conover; H.S., Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Eleanor McPahil, Fargo; Fred C., Spillville and Sam L., Minneapolis. One son and two daughters preceded him in death.
