Harold was born Nov. 18, 1923, in rural Decorah, the son of Harrison and Pearl (Ellingson) Barth. He grew up on a farm north of Decorah where he attended country school and helped his dad farm, run a steam engine threshing machine, and run the family saw mill. Harold entered the United States Army Air Force Jan. 21, 1943, serving as an airplane propeller and engine mechanic during WWII. Harold was discharged from the service Nov. 7, 1945, and returned to the Decorah area and worked as a self-employed trucker. Harold was united in marriage to his wife of 68 years, Helen Thorson, in La Crosse, Wis., April 12, 1946. The couple would make their home in Waterloo. During his life Harold worked for Carnation Swiss Valley in Waterloo, International Harvester in Waterloo, White Truck in Waterloo and Wilson/Tubbs Truck Stop in Cedar Rapids. He retired in 1983. Harold was a member of Teamsters Union Local 650. He enjoyed boating, where he taught all his kids to water ski, helping his boys fix their cars, his bicycle built for two, two way radios, cats and dogs, and his Ventura Recreational Vehicle; however, what he enjoyed most was spending time with his family.
