George K. Solheim, 89, of Castalia, Iowa, died Sunday, November 9, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society in West Union. George Kermit, the son of Knute and Clara (Thorbjornson) Solheim, was born April 1, 1925 on a farm north of Castalia. He attended country school near Castalia.
George was united in marriage with Luella Josephine Osterhus on March 29, 1944. Luella preceded him in death on November 24, 2010. George served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Philippines. After returning home, George ran a canned milk route for the Carnation Plant in Castalia. He then farmed south of Castalia until 1989. After he “retired” from farming, George started restoring old tractors and Studebakers. He ended up restoring hundreds of tractors and cars with this “hobby”.
George was a charter member of Bethany Lutheran Church and served as an elder, custodian, and Sunday School teacher. George’s relationship with God was very important to him. He enjoyed working on tractors and cars, and listening to Gospel music. He especially loved to spend time with his grandchildren.
George is survived by seven children, David (Linda) Solheim of Clermont; Don (Kathy) Solheim of Castalia; Phil (Sheila) Solheim of Clermont; Wanda (Pete) Tweed of Ossian; Kermit (Robin) Solheim of Cedar Rapids; Linda (Steve) Dunt; and Deb (Todd) Bovy of West Union; twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-four great grandchildren; one sister, Ida “Betty” Osterhus of Mountain Home, Arkansas; and Gordon (Jeanive) Solheim of Platte, South Dakota.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Luella; two grandsons, Nick and Darin Solheim; one great-grandson, Andrew Solheim; and his parents.
