Elmer Paul Hemesath, 80, of Ossian, Iowa, died Monday, October 6, 2014 at Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, Iowa, following a courageous battle with his long-term illness. He was born on March 13, 1934 to Henry and Alvina (Scheidelmantel) Hemesath in rural Ossian, Iowa. Elmer attended St. Francis de Sales Catholic School in Ossian and graduated high school in 1953. While in high school, he worked in Montana for his brother-in-law, Paul Huber, for three summers.

On October 15, 1953, Elmer married his high school sweetheart, DeAnn Schroeder at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, together they raised seven children. Elmer joined the United States Army on October 28, 1953 and served as a military policeman. After two years, he was honorably discharged in September 1955. After his discharge from the Army, he worked for Schroeder’s Clothing Store, Schmitz’s Furniture Store and Haug’s Plumbing & Heating in Spillville. He went to work for Walnut Grove Products on September 1, 1967 and retired as a feed salesman in March of 1996. Elmer also held several part-time jobs while working full time including a sub-rural mail carrier, school bus driver, World Book Encyclopedia salesman and manager of the Silver Springs Softball Diamond. After retiring from Walnut Grove, Elmer worked part-time at Becker’s Hardware Store.

Elmer was a life-long parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and was a member of the Rosary Society. He also belonged to the American Legion Post #503, Knights of Columbus Council #503 and Silver Springs Golf & Country Club. He enjoyed fishing, hot air balloon rides, airplanes, gardening, country music and golfing.

Elmer is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, DeAnn; four sons, Alan (Nancy) Hemesath of Cedar Falls, Kim (Barbara) Hemesath of Freeport, Illinois, Tod (Richele) Hemesath of La Crescent, Minnesota, Grant (Lori) Hemesath of Ossian; three daughters, Teena (Rick) Hosper of Calmar, Stephanie (Keith) Gerlich of Calmar and Catherine (Tim) Wright of Monona; seventeen grandchildren, Heather (Jason) Loftsgard of Marion, Iowa, Danielle (Joe) Hermann of Waukee, Iowa, Sean Hemesath of Cedar Falls, Alicia and Aaron Hemesath of Freeport, Illinois, Jessica (Steve) Krob of North Liberty, Iowa, Jennifer Hemesath of Nashua, Iowa, Amanda Dittman and Tanner Hemesath of La Crescent, Minnesota, Nathan (Jessica) Hosper of Owatonna, Minnesota, Tasha (Darren) Welsh of Atlantic, Iowa, Dane Gerlich of Des Moines, Elizabeth Hemesath of Ossian, Jeremy Wright of Troy, New York, Jamie Wright of Sextonville, Wisconsin, Hannah and Christopher Wright of Monona; fourteen great-grandchildren, Anika, Kael & Maren Loftsgard, Lily and Claire Hermann, Maecy and Liam Krob, Avery and Cassandra Hosper, Adelyn, Aubrey, Ariana and Tyler Welsh and Kierra Atkinson; two brothers, Art Hemesath of Ossian and Henry (Marilyn) Hemesath of Monona; sister-in-law, DeEtta “Dot” Hemesath of Ridgeway, Iowa and brothers-in-law , Karl Schroeder of Ossian and Steve (Ann) Schroeder of Kirbyville, Missouri and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Alvina Hemesath; his mother and father-in-law, Catherine and William Schroeder; his brothers Joseph and Alphonse Hemesath; his sister, Doris Huber; brother-in-law, Paul Huber and sister-in-law, Audrey “Toots” Schroeder.

Visitation will be on Friday, October 10, 2014 from 4-8 pm at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa with a 4:00 pm Knights of Columbus Rosary and a 7:30 pm Scripture Service. There will also be a one hour visitation before Mass time at the church on Saturday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Ossian, Iowa with Msgr. Cletus Hawes as the Celebrant.

Inurnment will follow at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Cemetery, Ossian, Iowa.
