A Celebration of Life is Monday, Sept. 8, at Roseville Lutheran Church, 1215 Roselawn Ave., Roseville, Minn., at 11 a.m. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Interment is Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, at 10:30 a.m. Memorials are preferred to Vesterheim Museum, Decorah, Luther College (Charles Fritz Scholarship), Roseville Lutheran Church (Music Fund), or donor’s choice.
Marion grew up during the Depression in Nordness, but always said her childhood was wonderful and filled with happy memories of sleigh rides, helping at her father’s General Store, and attending a one-room schoolhouse with her many sisters. She always told people proudly she was “100 percent Norwegian.” She graduated first from Decorah High School and then from the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport, where she honed her excellent typing and shorthand skills. She worked in the Iowa State Legislature for the 48th and 49th General Assemblies and then married Eliel, a young Luther College grad whose career in business would take them all over the United States. Wherever she went, Marion was known for her excellent cooking and warm hospitality to the many friends and family who came to visit. She made sure that her home was always filled with music and was a fine singer and pianist herself. Her devotion to her children and grandchildren was boundless and she displayed love, patience and acceptance to all. Her legacy to the world was a large loving family, and she will be keenly missed by all of them.
Marion is survived by sisters, Florence Lynch and Darlyne Rugland; daughters: Ann (Mike) Woelffer, Janet (Paul) Quello, Carol Barr, Lorna (Craig) Wagner, Marilyn (John) Shardlow, Sara (Jim) Ryan; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents, Charles and Eliza Nelson; siblings: Agnes Estrem Spilde, Evelyn Haugen, Beatrice Smithling Paulson, Clarice Hexom Gilbertson, Gladys Hicken, Charles O. Nelson; and beloved husband of 69 years, Eliel Fritz.
