Audrey Hexom Jordahl passed away Friday, July 4, 2014, in the presence of her son Jim and her son Jonathan (by phone from S. Korea). Her life and her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will be celebrated at her memorial service at Mill Pond Retirement Community, Ankeny, Tuesday, July 15, at 1:30 p.m. The interment service is at Big Canoe Lutheran Church north of Decorah at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 27.

Audrey was born in Virginia, Minn., Dec. 17, 1922, the first child of Rev. William T. and Charlotte Hexom. The family moved to Hawkins, Wis. when she was nine, and she managed to graduate from high school there, even though the family moved to Big Canoe, north of Decorah, during her senior year. Audrey interrupted her studies at Luther College during World War II to serve in the U.S. Navy, where she taught celestial navigation to pilots with a flight simulator, returning to graduate in 1948. She later went to graduate school at the University of Iowa, where she met and married Erling Jordahl, a former Navy pilot who was also the son of a Lutheran pastor. She spent most of her life in the Coralville / Iowa City area. She worked in real estate, as a stockbroker, and for years as a Lutheran Brotherhood insurance representative. She was a charter member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, and remained very active there for many years. She also was very active in politics -- not only as an active member of the Republican Women; she also ran for public office twice (county supervisor and state representative). She was invited to the White House to meet both Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush. She was active in many organizations, most notably Mensa, for which she was for years the testing coordinator, and WAVES National, for which she was national parliamentarian. In retirement she worked as a substitute postmaster and remained active in volunteering at the University Hospitals. She cared for her grandchildren, Noah and Delilah, after school for years. In later years, she enjoyed very much the community atmosphere of the Mill Pond Retirement Community in Ankeny, and visits of nearby son Jim, his wife Cathy and their daughter Abbey, and visits by son Jonathan, who was able to come home from S. Korea during extended academic vacations.

Audrey is survived by her sons Jonathan (Daegu, S. Korea) and Jim and his wife, Cathy Ockenfels-Jordahl (Ankeny); sisters, Connie and Eunice (Decorah); brothers, Paul (Decorah) and David (Fridley, Minn.), grandchildren Noah Jordahl (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Lilah Jaworski (Kingston, Ontario), and Abbey Jordahl (Ankeny).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Erling Jordahl; her father and mother; and her brother, Charles.
Audrey loved to be with her friends, and there are many of you.
