Janice Woodhouse, age 94, of Decorah, IA, died on Friday, June 20, 2014, at Wellington Place in Decorah. Since 2006 she had lived at Patty Elwood Center, Cresco, and Wellington Place.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wellington Place Auxiliary, 2479 River Road, Decorah, IA 52101, or to St. Benedict Catholic Church, 307 West Main Street, Decorah, IA 52101.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, 307 West Main St., Decorah, IA, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from: 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Monday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, 604 South Avenue, and also after 9:30 a.m., at the church on Tuesday morning. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah is handling arrangements.

Janice Dorothy Headington/Dideriksen Woodhouse was born on January 2, 1920, the daughter of George “Todd” and Hilma (Dahl) Headington in Olds, Alberta, Canada. Janice’s mother died when she was 1 month old. She was raised by Pete and Ella (Froelich) Dideriksen. They lived near Wadena, Saskatchewan until Janice was three years old, when they moved to West Saint Paul, MN, and then to several other cities as Pete searched for work during the Great Depression. When Janice was in sixth grade, she moved with her family to Decorah. Janice graduated from Decorah High School in 1937, and attended secretarial school at the Rasmussen School of Business in St. Paul, MN. She returned to Decorah and worked for attorneys Carroll and John Cutting and at Bolson Feeds. It was at Bolson Feeds, where she met Joseph Woodhouse. They were married on June 21, 1944 at St. Benedict Catholic Church. After she had her children, she worked for 20 years as a nurses’ aide at Decorah’s Smith Memorial Hospital, moving in 1971, to the new Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital. She assisted in the delivery and care of many babies in the Obstetrics Department during her last years there, before she retired in 1984. Janice loved her family and life on the farm. She especially found joy in her children and grandchildren. Janice enjoyed baking, gardening and writing poetry. She baked excellent pies. She also wrote poetry from a young age for family, friends, and hospital co-workers, and penned poems about community affairs, some of which were published in Decorah newspapers. She wrote a special poem for each of her children when they graduated from high school. Janice was a member of the Madison Willing Workers, a neighborhood social and service club. She attended First Lutheran Church, and became a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and St. Margaret Circle after she married.

Janice’s survivors include her five children: Tom (Mary) Woodhouse, Carlisle, IA; Linda Woodhouse & husband Doug Peterson, Alexandria, VA; Mary (Rich) Boesch, Sioux City, IA; Dennis Woodhouse, Decorah, IA and Paul (Darlene) Woodhouse, Decorah, IA. One son-in-law: Roger Gruenke, Shawnee, KS. Eleven grandchildren: Matt (Rachel) Woodhouse, Des Moines, IA; Erik Woodhouse (fiancé, Kit Cassidy), St. George, UT; Katie (Luke) Shields, Altoona, IA; Ryan (Shana) Hadenfeld,Swannanoa, NC; Ashlin Hadenfeld, Lawrence, KS; Julia Peterson, Alexandria, VA; Christopher (Sarah) Boesch, Sioux City, IA; Andrew Boesch, Sioux City, IA, Mark Boesch, Sioux City. IA, Alicia Woodhouse, Marion, IA; and Josh Woodhouse, Independence, IA; and four great-grandchildren, Payton & Adaline Shields, Altoona, IA, Benjamin Hadenfeld, Swannanoa, NC, and Faith Boesch, Sioux City, IA. One brother: Leo Headington, Lumby, British Columbia, Canada; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, James and Marjorie Bednarz, Minnetonka, MN.

Janice was preceded in death by her husband: Joseph Woodhouse, on July 15, 2006; her parents; her daughter: Beverly Gruenke on April 21, 2003, one sister: Mona (Ray) Jacobs; and one step-brother, Richard Headington.
