Adrian Holthaus, age 77, of Decorah, IA, died on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 21, 2014, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 307 West Main Street, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Dan Knipper presiding. Burial will be in the St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery, Decorah, IA.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday, June 20, 2014, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue, Decorah, and also after 9:30 a.m., at the church on Saturday morning.

Adrian Leo Holthaus was born on March 5, 1937, the son of Raymond and Hilda (Bohr) Holthaus, near Castalia, IA. Adrian was baptized at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, IA. Adrian attended St. Francis de Sales Catholic School and St. Benedict Catholic School. After his schooling, he farmed with his father and then with his aunt. Adrian was married to Donna Reed in 1957 and together had nine children. Adrian farmed north of Decorah, as well as operating a portable feed grinding business. In 1971, he went to work for Bruening Rock Products until 1987. He worked crushing rock as well as many other capacities for them. He then quit and started working for Reilly Construction for 19 years, retiring in 2005. Adrian worked hard all of his life and this is a trait that he taught all of his children. Adrian was married to Sue MacDonald on May 27, 1987 at St. Agnes-Plymouth Rock Catholic Church, near Burr Oak, IA. Adrian had a passion for collecting John Deere tractors and had all seven of the “30” series, as well as fifteen two cylinder tractors and others in his collection. Adrian and Sue, along with the children and grandchildren enjoyed driving all of the tractors in many parades over the years. Adrian enjoyed playing cards and fishing in earlier years.

Adrian is survived by his wife: Sue Holthaus, Decorah, IA. Eight children: John (Patti) Holthaus, Fountain, MN; Paul (Deb) Holthaus, Decorah, IA; Alan Holthaus, Decorah, IA; Tom Holthaus, Decorah, IA; Lisa Boyce, Wichita, KS; Dawn (Kevin) Bernhard, Bancroft, IA; Shari Brink, Waukon, IA; and Raymond (Holly) Holthaus, Rozet, WY. Two stepchildren: Christopher Grandon, Ames, IA, and Jill Houston, Manly, IA, along with twenty-four grandchildren, many great grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren. Six siblings: Willard (Mary Ellen) Holthaus, Decorah, IA; Inez (Dan) Schmitt, West Union, IA; Judy (Norbert) Bullerman, Calmar, IA; Dave Holthaus, Decorah, IA; Connie Sande, Decorah, IA; and Max (Karl) Klotzbach, Decorah, IA. Two sisters-in-law: Elaine Holthaus, Dubuque, IA, and Lorraine Holthaus, Decorah, IA. Brother-in-law: Doug Blair, Miamisburg, OH, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Aunt: Sister Marie Bohr, OSF, Dubuque, IA. One brother-in-law: Jack (Julie) MacDonald, Clear Lake, IA.

Adrian was preceded in death by his parents: Raymond and Hilda (Bohr) Holthaus. One daughter: Teresa Holthaus. Two grandchildren: Jessica Sue and Travis. Two sisters: Jane Blair and Pat Seiler. Two brothers: Ken Holthaus and Ron Holthaus. One brother-in-law: James MacDonald. Nephew: Philip Blair.
