Jean Ann (Giblin) Barnes, 74, of Ossian, IA died Friday, May 30, 2014 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa. She was born June 23, 1939 to Francis and Bernice (VanAuken) Giblin in Oelwein, Iowa. Jean attended St. Francis de Sales School, Ossian, Iowa and Central High School for eleven years and graduated from Garrison High School, Garrison, Iowa in 1956. Jean graduated from Paris Beauty Academy of Cosmetology in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and received her license in 1957.

Jean was united in marriage with Dean Barnes on September 6, 1958 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Two children were born of this marriage, Brenda Jean and Bradley Dean. They lived in Cedar Rapids until they moved to Ossian in 1969 and bought Art’s Roller Rink, they owned and operated Dean’s Roller Rink for fifteen years. In 1983, they moved to Fresno, California, while there, Jean Ann got her Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate. After they returned to Ossian in 1995, she worked at Good Sam’s Nursing Home in Postville and the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah for eighteen years, when she retired in 2013.

Jean loved talking, visiting, giving advice to family, friends and co-workers, cooking, baking and spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, water aerobics, she was an adventure taker, was always ready to go out with friends for supper and have a good time. She loved to dance, especially square dancing. Her and Dean taught Ballroom dancing in the early years of their marriage. Jean was a member St. Francis de Sales Parish and its Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of Americas, Thursday Night Bridge Club and the Co-op morning coffee friends.

Jean is survived by her children, Brenda (David) Johnson of Ossian and Bradley (Diane) Barnes of Florence, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Nichole (Robert) Datzman of Carver, MN, Noelle Johnson of Urbandale, IA and Danielle (Edward) Wadsworth of Edgewood, IA and two great-grandchildren, Remington and Gunnar Wadsworth and a third great-grandchild Baby Datzman on the way.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband Dean in 2005, her parents, grandparents, and a brother Michael in infancy.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Ossian, IA with a visitation two hours before Mass time at the church on Saturday. Rev. Msgr. Cletus Hawes will be the Celebrant.

Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Parnell, Iowa.
