Thelma “Toots” Eleanor Brekke was born on October 9, 1916 in Spillville, Iowa to Theodore and Emma (Albertson) Thompson. She attended grade school and high school in Spillville.
Thelma was united in marriage to Vernon Brekke on May 8, 1940 in Spillville. The couple moved to Ridgeway, Iowa, where Thelma worked as a telephone operator until moving to West Union in 1947. Thelma found work as a clerk at Tangen’s Store and a short time at Saboe Jewelry. In 1952, she started working part-time in the Bockenstedt’s Loan Office. She also kept books for Vernon’s Pontiac Agency until they sold the dealership and began selling MAC Tools for 20 years. After retirement, Thelma and Vernon enjoyed fishing trips to Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Thelma passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Stoney Brook Assisted Living in West Union. Thelma was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church of West Union. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, doing crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble with a special group of ladies. She loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Thelma particularly enjoyed the time spent with her family cooking their favorite traditional Norwegian dish lefsa.
Thelma is survived by a son, Lonnie (Mary Ann) Brekke of West Union; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Ignacio) Fuentes of Elgin, Jessica (Jerem) White of West Union, Justin (Abby) Brekke of New Hartford and Erin (Mario) Garzon of Chicago, Illinois; and great-grandchildren, Kaleb White, Kyler White, Kendrick White, Andre Fuentes, Isabella Fuentes, Kiana Fuentes, Vera Brekke and Walter Brekke. She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Terri McCormick; a grandson, Kyle McCormick; parents; three brothers and four sisters.
The family would like to express special thanks for the wonderful care Thelma received from the staff at Stoney Brook.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union with the Rev. Nancy Larson officiating. A visitation will be held starting one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in West Union Cemetery.
A public visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 from 4 pm until 7 pm at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union.
